A much needed rebound was found tonight as the A-State women’s basketball team picked up its first victory of the season over SIU-Edwardsville after a career game from senior forward Peyton Martin.

Martin scored 28 points on the night, leading the team in scoring and also came away with eight rebounds which led the team in that category as well. Not too far behind Martin was junior transfer Jada Stinson who put up an impressive 24 point performance as well, shooting a nearly impeccable 8-9 from the field.

While the win seemed comfortable throughout three quarters of the game, it was actually just the second quarter that saw the Red Wolves break away from the Cougars as A-State outscored SIU-E 25-16 in the second frame. Every other quarter was razor thin, with A-State outscoring the Cougars by just one point in the first and third quarters, and SIU-E actually outscoring the Red Wolves 26-22 in the final quarter.

As a team, the Red Wolves shot slightly better than the Cougars, as the teams shot 53% and 48% respectively. Both teams turned the ball over 21 times, and SIU-E came away with one more rebound in the game to create a 35-34 advantage in that department. The key turning point was A-State’s ability to steal the ball, as they were able to do so 15 times compared to SIU-E’s 10.

With the win, A-State improves to 1-1 on the season and have a week to prepare for a rematch against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Dec. 10, which will be the Red Wolves’ first road test of the season.
